Downtown Tacoma is laid with its
numbered streets sloping down toward the water. Some of that grade
is evident in this scene along the private right of way that the
streetcar uses to get between its runs along Commerce St. and Pacific
Ave.
New
buildings, including the future Convention Center, were going up on both sides of Commerce
at the time of this 2003 photo. The next six pages show the march of
progress: views in this area taken in early summer in successive years.
