This image greets passengers entering the subway at
Union Station.  It is a portion of a much larger ceramic
tile mural entitled "Traveler" that spans in its coverage many centuries of L.A.
history.  The artist is Terry Schoonhoven.  It is an
		attention-grabbing work of public art.

When the subway first opened in 1993, and for more than three years
thereafter, it went no further than Westlake/MacArthur Park, a total of a
mere five stations  -- surely the shortest subway system then
operating in the country.  Expansion took place in several stages,
with the last addition reaching the San Fernando Valley in 2000. |
